learning the rooms
you can't fight what you live inside. so i'm learning the rooms.
An enormous old Victorian birdcage, its door standing wide open, turned into a little home: a fringed lamp, a stack of books, a potted plant, a patterned rug and a deep armchair. A woman with long curly hair and big dark sunglasses sits curled up in the chair with a cup of tea, a sulphur-crested cockatoo on her shoulder. One small orange flower climbs up the bars.
That's me in the sunglasses, with the cockatoo who keeps me company on the hard days. The door's open. I'm choosing to make it home.
A long sleeve for the cold rooms, the bed days and the days you stop fighting your body and start living in it anyway.
For chronic illness, disability, and everyone making a home in a body they can't leave.
