the small things - 2027 calendar
twelve creatures people squash, swat and scream at. all of them still here.
The cockroach, the huntsman, the fly, the wasp. The things people spray, swat and scream at, drawn like pages from an old natural history book and finally given the last word.
Each month pairs a fine-line engraving with a line in the creature's voice:
jan · cicada: years underground. now i'm the loudest thing in summer.
feb · fly: i see everything at once. that's why i'm so jumpy.
mar · dung beetle: they only see the dirt. i find my way home by the stars.
apr · earwig: they made up stories about me. i was busy raising my kids.
may · huntsman: i'm the size of your hand and i'm scared of you too.
jun · millipede: when it gets too much, i curl up. that's allowed.
jul · stick insect: i've been here the whole time. you just didn't see me.
aug · rhinoceros beetle: i carry more than anyone thinks for something my size.
sep · paper wasp: i'm not aggressive. you're standing on my home.
oct · bogong moth: i fly a thousand kilometres in the dark. nobody claps for that.
nov · praying mantis: they only remember the one thing i did.
dec · cockroach: they've tried everything to get rid of me. i'm still here.
The months follow the Australian seasons: cicadas in summer, the huntsman coming inside when it gets cold, the millipede curled up through the longest night, the bogongs flying in spring. And the cockroach is still here at the end of the year. The art is drawn in white and one flat safety orange on black.
For the small, the overlooked, the scared and the still-here.
